Technically, Nintendo has only confirmed two games it will be showing at E3 this year, those being the already-released Splatoon 2 and the in-development Super Smash Bros. However, it would be surprising if Nintendo didn't use E3 as a time to shine a spotlight on Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee as well, though it's important to note that those games aren't confirmed for E3 at the time of this writ

He's a likable, distinct hero who frankly deserves a better game. Perhaps he'll get it when Xbox 720 and Kinect 2.0 - with its rumored ability to read lips and recognize emotions - roll around, but for now, there's just no need to take The Journ

Fifteen years later, after being integrated into basically every kind of video game, the concept of a simple morality system has gone out of style. While some games have been experimenting with a more complex system, such as The Witcher 3 's Geralt being an influential but neutral force in the world, it would be a benefit to Fable 4 to have a similarly deep and complex morality system that goes beyond angel wings and ho

On the occasions when everything works exactly as advertised, Fable: The Journey proves to be good - if simplistic - fun. Using Gabriel's gauntlets to launch enemies into the air, and then decimating them with a well-placed blast of magical energy, can be extremely satisfying. Sequences in which Gabriel and Theresa flee from The Corruption, Seren galloping at a breakneck pace as the surrounding landscape is overtaken and defiled by The Corruption's crimson mass, are among the most intense, graphically potent set-pieces The Journey has to offer. Sadly, those occasions are too few and far between, and the game is constantly undermined by its finicky, imprecise Kinect contr

So why not keep the cycle going by making a Grand Theft Auto movie, complete with all of the violence, satire and gleeful immorality that made the video game series such a hit. That leads us to one big candidate: Playground Games, makers of the recently released and well-received Xbox-exclusive Forza Horizon , who have been known to be working on an open-world RPG for Microsoft for some time. Job postings by Playground indicate they are looking for artists and programmers with experience in these fields and Horizons was itself an open world game, just with cars instead of swords and hor

The game itself roughly breaks down into two primary modes of play: driving sequences and combat sequences. Whatever happened to Fable ? Despite being one of the highest profile, exclusive franchises on the Xbox, after the release of Fable 3 , Microsoft didn't seem to know what to do with the franchise. With a nearly-forgotten experiment with the Kinect, Fable: Journeys , and some Xbox Live Arcade games based on the minigames in the franchise, there hasn't been a commitment to a mainline Fable game in nearly a decade. With the recent closure of Fable developer Lionhead Games, one of the dearly departed studios from the late-period PC market of the 90s and made up of many castoffs from Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper Bullfrog, and the even more recent cancellation of the multiplayer-focused Fable: Legends , there seemed to be no hope for a new installment in what was once the most exciting RPG franchise e

Visceral has been working on its Star Wars game for years, and with Uncharted director Amy Hennig at the helm, there has been quite a bit of excitement for the game. Sadly, EA and Visceral have kept their cards close to their chest, and so we know virtually nothing about what Visceral's Star Wars game has in store for gamers. With this year's E3 being dedicated to Star Wars Battlefront 2 , maybe E3 2018 will finally be the time for Visceral's Star Wars game to sh

To be fair, we were warned ahead of time that Death Stranding wouldn't be at E3 2017. Even so, Hideo Kojima's reputation for tricking fans meant that there was still a slim possibility the game would make a surprise appearance during Sony's E3 press conference. Unfortunately, Death Stranding was nowhere to be seen at the show, meaning fans are still largely in the dark about its gameplay features, story, and whether or not there is any truth to the Emma Stone casting rumo

Not only was the Metroid Prime 4 announcement surprising, but so too was the confirmation that the game isn't being developed by Retro Studios . Retro worked on the original trilogy of Metroid Prime games, and many fans were expecting the studio to return for Metroid Prime 4 , only to learn that the game is being developed by a brand new team. But if Retro Studios isn't working on Metroid Prime 4 , what could it possibly be developing? Getting together with three other friends makes playing Fable Heroes feel less empty, but after one or two levels you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that was having fun. The trailer breaks from the franchise’s hardcore action and slows things down a bit, allowing viewers to see the softer side of the series’ protagonist, Kratos. Going into E3, one game that seemed like a guarantee for Sony's press conference was The Last of Us: Part 2 . The game generated significant buzz when it was revealed at the PlayStation Experience last year, but Sony decided not to show it at E3. According to Naughty Dog, the reason for this was to give Uncharted: The Lost Legacy some time in the spotlight , but another motive could be Sony wanting to put more energy into its PlayStation Experience event than

Super Mario 64 is a game full of bright colors and family-friendly platforming action, which makes the inclusion of the Big Boo's Haunt level rather jarring. After escaping the T-Rex and the enemy clan, Vin Diesel and his group find themselves in a ruin full of technology . Of note, the child in the trailer examines a rock with several carvings on it. Aside from the T-Rex and Brontosaurus which already had spotlights, there are at least three other dinosaurs shown that aren't yet accounted

Movement off the horse, such as in a dungeon or mine, occurs with no player input, putting focus solely on clearing away baddies. Combat is handled via two main powers controlled by each hand. The right hand casts a damage-dealing attack spell, while the left hand can push enemies back or fling environmental objects at them. To execute either attack, you simply aim at the intended target and push your lower arm away from your upper arm with the palm facing out. While it’s a simple combat system, it truly feels that you are the one casting the spells -- always a victory for motion-based titles. Common variances like needing the left hand to pull the armor off of an enemy, while dealing damage with the right prevents gameplay from seeming stale.

The next big thing for Nintendo is it’s upcoming console-handheld hybrid device. Capping off a great year for Respawn Entertainment, this game finally provided the engaging single-player focused Star Wars experience that players have been yearning for ever since EA and Disney struck their Star Wars game deal all those years ago. Besides combat and travel, there are plenty of other motion-based opportunities throughout Albion. Activities like corralling chickens, lighting lanterns and moving obstacles may seem mundane, but serve to enrich the experience, making sure there’s always a fresh task to keep players interested. Most of these secondary actions have their own unique movements to avoid redundancies. Not content to let your arms have all the fun, there will be times where multiple paths can be selected from by bending your torso left or right. With all the different movements, it’s clear Lionhead was content on utilizing the full potential of motion-control.

One of the most shocking moments of E3 2017 was when Nintendo announced not one, but two Metroid games. With Nintendo forgoing a traditional press conference yet again, the extent of the Big N's presence at E3 is a bit of an unknown factor. Without a doubt, Fable II is one of the most anticipated games of the year. Still, in the weeks leading up to its release, the feeling of dread was palpable. Many gamers remember the hype surrounding the original title, only to be disappointed when they received an experience that was great but not the classic they had felt they were promised.

When you do eventually decide to stop snickering over the fact you have to purchase condoms in order to prevent a coinpurse-draining pregnancy in any of your wives (or to avoid nasty STDs from Albion’s ladies of the night), you will be happy to learn that the Quests in this game are varied and entertaining. Even the simplest quest will occasionally blindside you with a deeply profound choice. This is where the morality system really shines, but some would say it is unbalanced. To become a truly evil character you need not leave the first town you are set down in, but to actually max out as a good character will take you a significant amount of hours. To me, unlike the unbalanced economy, the ease of being an evil character and the difficulty of being a good character are as realistic as it can be. It is much easier to rob and steal than it is to take daunting quests and help improve the world you live in. It is up to you to decide whether you will take the instant gratification and ease of an evil character or the more rewarding and difficult path of a pillar of heroism in the society. The quests in Fable II embrace this fact and, while not giving you enough overtly good options, make the game incredibly replayable. You will never, ever be at a loss for something to kill time with in Albion.

Mixed with Disturbed’s rendition of Sound of Silence, and the trailer fits very well into the long line of impressive trailers for the franchise. The trailer is a great introduction to the game, as it’s the start of a new era in the Gears of War universe. This era is likely to continue, too, as the game received strong reviews and continues to sport a large player b

While Fable proper was about taking one's player through a pre-determined life cycle — making life-altering decisions along the way — Fable Heroes puts up to four players in control of a wide variety of Fable archetypes. Rather than giving each player the gameplay mechanics present in the RPG version of the game, Heroes designates each player's "puppet hero" with a specific skill. There are a handful of puppets to choose from, some of which hearken back to key moments in Fable 's history, but all basically fall into one of three roles (ranged, melee, mag

The best way to describe Fable 3 is an introduction to RPGs. The normal RPG fare of branching ability trees and leveling up is missing. In its place is an engaging, but simple, experience for those looking to dip their toe into the RPG world. Players don’t need to understand leveling to understand how to successfully play the game. They don’t need to dive deeply into a complex menu system in order to change out equipment so they’re geared correctly for a fi

The game is unofficially split into three sections. The first section involves traveling throughout Albion, gaining support from the people, and leading the revolution against the king. Heroes can gain this support by completing quests or interacting with people. Many of the quests will result in making a promise to a leader of the town (more on those later). Interacting with the people directly is a great way to earn friends and can eventually lead to marriage and children. Unlike previous Fable games, only one person can be influenced at a time. To further emphasize this, starting an interaction with someone causes the screen to fade to black and come back with only the hero and the other person in focus. While it’s not a huge deal, that extra 1-2 seconds while the screen fades and comes back gets really annoying after 12 hours of game p

Peter Molyneux’s role in the gaming industry has been one of the longest in the industry’s history, with his first game, The Entrepreneur , being released in 1984. The Entrepreneur , despite Molyneux’s enthusiasm toward it, was a mass commercial failure, said to have sold only two copies (one of which rumored to be from his own mother). After the game’s brutal release, Molyneux left the industry for the next three years, until he teamed up with Les Edgar to begin the game development company Bullfrog Productions. Though the company released a scrolling shooter named Fusion a year before, 1989 marked the release of Populous , Molyneux’s claim to fame and what is arguably the very first "god game." Populous was a commercial success, becoming the best-selling game from the company and becoming the progenitor for future strategy games of its kind. Further Bullfrog games like Dungeon Keeper followed in Populous’ wake until Molyneux created Lionhead Studios to produce other god games like Black and White . Molyneux steadily continued experimenting with new ways to play with Fable on Xbox and use of Microsoft’s Kinect peripheral (with the tech demo Milo ). Currently with 22 Cans Studios, Molyneux is developing a "spiritual successor" to his game Populous called Godus , which met funding goals on Kickstarter in 2012.

Fable III was another big moment for Molyneux. The game introduced more management features in ruling the kingdom, but was panned for many of the same simplification qualms that plagued the first Fable . It certainly wasn’t poorly received, but it showed that many of these ideas that Molyneux pitches are ones that are much less practical and efficient within the current state of the medium. If the first part of the Molyneux Paradigm is hyping up a game to ridiculous levels, then the second part is to show unequivocal disdain for the game a ways after release. Fable III has been labeled by Molyneux as a "train wreck," when, all things considered, it really wasn’t. It had flaws, but the things that worked actually worked rather well. This same attitude was also delivered from Molyneux with Fable II . During the lead-up to Fable III , Fable II was considered "rubbish." Everything in the game, from the story to the controls to the aesthetic design, was bashed to no end by Molyneux himself. To make this concept even more surreal, Molyneux has even been severely self-critical to his game Populous , one of the keystones of the god game genre.

Sledgehammer Games has already revealed the single player portion of Call of Duty: WW2 , and so far the game has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response. However, the bread and butter of the Call of Duty franchise has almost always been its multiplayer, and so all eyes will be on Call of Duty: WW2 at E3 to see if the multiplayer can generate as much excitement as the single player campa

If there's one thing that gamers everywhere seem to hold their breath for, it's Halo . Since Bungie parted ways with the property after completing development on Halo: Reach , the reins of the series has been handed over to the more than capable minds at 343 Industries. While the idea of a Halo 4 is just too good to imagine, industry rumors have been pointing to a game not only being under development, but even scheduled for a holiday release. The latest industry rumors point to the next game not being the continuation of Master Chief's story, but rather an HD remake of Halo: Combat Evolv

Peter Molyneux has created a number of legendary titles since he began making games in the '80s, earning numerous accolades and pioneering one of the most important genres in gaming history. But his ambition has become somewhat infamous over time; he’s always reaching for creative new ways to play and experience games, but almost always misses the target in some way, shape or form. And Molyneux’s eagerness to innovate is no secret (he’s admitted it himself): he’s formed a recurring theme for anything he’s made. Peter Molyneux refuses to settle in the current environment of gaming; whether it’s good, bad or in between, the Lionhead visionary has never stayed in one place in the industry. He loves the future, but can never reach it. He hates the past, but can never embrace its strengths. Welcome to the Molyneux Paradigm.

The star of the show is clearly the world of Albion. From a purely aesthetic standpoint, you can see how easy it is to be drawn in. Slightly cartoony visuals make the world so charming you will want to explore every area for fear of missing the smallest detail. It is easy to take the most menial task and turn it into hours of exploration and enjoyment, which also adds to the feeling that your options are limitless. Need to find an item? Why not take some time and search that forest for hidden treasure first. Need some side money? Well, Albion offers plenty of options to make it, from taking a real 9-5 job, becoming a store owner or slum lord, or even looting houses. Depending on your character type and play style, you can find something to do at any time without even delving into a single quest.

Sadly, I can tell you right now that this game suffers from many of the same problems the original Fable had. The in-game economy is still woefully simple, the plot and many of the characters still lack depth, and the world of Albion in all its glory still feels like it was laid out with anything but feng shui in mind.

While Molyneux’s inventive mindset gave rise to the "god game" genre (a genre loved by many a PC gamer), he’s also earned himself a number of negative connotations with how he promotes his games. It’s become a running joke that Molyneux tends to hype up any project he invests in to absurdly high levels, only to have the games miss their mark in one way or another. Fable became one of the most noteworthy examples of this "Molyneux Paradigm." During the game’s development, Fable was regarded by Molyneux and Lionhead as a paramount innovation in role-playing games. Using more open-ended role-playing elements like morality and personal alignments was pitched as this rejuvenation of the role-playing idea, a way to give players more options in creating an avatar and playing to their liking. Molyneux himself even referred to Fable as what would be "the best game ever" during the development.

The daunting task of giving them classic they wanted was left up to Peter Molyneux and his team, and the task may have not have seemed that difficult for them. The original Fable presented an amazing amount of detail to the world, but it simply seemed to fall short on a few key areas. All they had to do this time around was expand on the good and improve on these problems and they would have a game etched into the upper echelon of the new generation.

Fable eventually was released in 2005 to high anticipation, but the game failed to live up to Molyneux’s sky-high aspirations. The game earned acclaim for its real-time combat and various methods of dispatching foes, but the morality system was much more limited than originally pitched (good and evil were the only really distinctive ways to progress in the game) and a number of features such as the children component were missing. The abilities to impact the story and the world around you were disappointingly limited as well. But despite these problems, Fable was still received with enough praise that it became a full-fledged series, with Fable II dropping in 2008 and Fable III in 2010.

From a technical standpoint, the graphics and music are both top notch. The games only real negative in this category is that, more often than not, combat and controlling the character can feel a bit detached and clunky. While combat itself is rewarding, with the ability to switch between melee, magic, and ranged almost instantaneously to keep bad guys on their toes, actually controlling your character can be a frustrating occurrence. You will be plagued by the occasional cheap death, but thanks to not actually being able to die, you won’t have to worry about losing anything more than some experience points if you bite off more than you can chew. In the end, your enjoyment of Fable II will hinge on what is important to you in this type of game. If you are looking for an engrossing story with loveable characters, this might not please you. However, if you are looking for an impressive gameplay experience with tons of replayability, I could not recommend Fable II more. While it may have, once again, fallen short of being a classic, it is a large improvement over the first game despite its numerous weak points.

As of right now the only titles we have pegged to make an appearance during Microsoft’s press conference — as opposed to appearing on the show floor — are Gears of War 3 , Forza 4 , and a new Star Wars title developed specifically for Kinect. Aside from that the console exclusives are all left to speculation, but there are a few top tier titles that we most definitely would like to see app

One of the main reasons the story falls so flat is your character’s infinite silence. The only way to communicate with other characters is through a series of expressions that only really serve to illicit a base reaction from any NPC that sees them without any real discourse. Sure using the right expression will curry favor with the townspeople of Albion, and the wrong one will help to make them view you are boorish and rude, but it helps to illustrate the core issue with Fable II’s system. The game becomes about the choices you make, but not necessarily about the characters that those choices may alter. Due to the one-dimensional townspeople and lack of real interaction, scenes that should have some amount of emotional resonance fall significantly short. The only real feeling you have for any character is for your faithful canine companion, and even that is tenuous.

While Molyneux has certainly made this attitude a recurring (and expected) one, many of the creative ideas from him are the ones that never saw the light of day. Personally, I’m of the small camp who believe the Kinect/Natal demo Milo was an interesting idea that deserved to be investigated upon further ; maybe not with Kinect, but with the idea of simply talking to a person and developing a social relationship with them over time, similar to how you build the foundation of a city into a giant metropolis. Molyneux’s Milo project became one of the most iconic figures of the early years of Kinect, but the project was never realized, Kinect functionality or not. And quite frankly, Milo remained one of the more interesting Kinect projects. Considering the widespread disapproval of Kinect, one of the few good things to come out of it was the potential of a game like Milo . Molyneux was trying to make something cool out of something massively disliked: Milo out of Kinect.

And really, Peter Molyneux, for all his broken promises and enormous aspirations, is an innovator. He’s proven his enchantment with taking well-tread ideas and making them into something unexpected. Populous remains one of the most important games of all time, and that couldn’t have happened without some desire to step beyond the established setting. Fable to a lesser extent and certainly with the Milo demo, Peter Molyneux hasn’t made anything flat-out terrible in decades. But his tendency to get excited about his new ideas so much has led to a negative perception of who he is: many in the gaming community consider him a dreamer, not a doer. Quite frankly, I think that’s unfair to say. Some companies are perfectly content with what they’re doing in gaming, but Molyneux has proven time and again that he’s never satisfied with his creations. He’s always reaching further, even if his eagerness to progress has made him despise the past and ignore the present in awkwardly narrow-sighted ways.
