Before you buy, check the thickness of the top layer. A thicker wear layer lets you refinish the floor in the future, increasing the floor's lifespan. Also keep indoor humidity at a steady level with a humidifier in winter.

Homes in Canada face dramatic humidity changes from season to season. During winter, heating systems pull moisture from indoor air; in the warm months, humidity climb quickly. For natural wood, that constant movement can cause cracks, crowning and noise.

Vinyl plank flooring is often at the top of the list for families. It's waterproof or highly water-resistant, meaning spilled drinks become simple to handle. A strong wear layer will help reduce scratches, while its softer feel is quieter than tile.

This is where engineered hardwood really shines. Rather than being made from a single solid piece of wood, an engineered plank is made of multiple layers: a real hardwood top layer glued over a stable core. This layered structure minimizes seasonal movement.

Selecting the right floor is one of the most important decisions you can make during a remodeling project. In Canada, the decision is particularly important because our interiors have to survive cold, dry winters, warm and humid summers, snow and road salt carried in on every boot.

If you share your home with pets and kids, you already know how quickly floors can get damaged. Paws, toy cars and blocks, accidents and snow and slush can wear down the wrong floor in no time. Fortunately: today's floor materials are built to survive everyday chaos.

In the end, which floor is right for you? If the real thing and the ability to refinish are what you want, go with real wood. When budget, scratch resistance and simple care come first, quality laminate is a smart choice.

One important note: some vinyl and laminate products include a pre-attached pad. When that is the case, adding another underlay could create movement and affect the warranty. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Hardwood remains a feature buyers ask for most. Engineered hardwood gives you the same appeal and greater stability across the seasons. If your budget is tighter, quality laminate can provide an equally attractive finish for less.

When shopping for new floors, most of the attention goes to the colour, style and price. But what you put under the floor is just as important. A good underlayment improves how the floor feels, sound and moisture protection, while can help your new floor last longer.

Consistency is also important. A mix of flooring types in connected spaces can make a space feel choppy. Using a single floor through the main living areas gives a more spacious look that looks great in listing photos.

Its first role is sound reduction. Floors that are not glued down often sound noisy if installed directly on the subfloor. A good acoustic underlay absorbs that hollow sound, something that is especially useful in apartments and condos in which building rules often set minimum sound ratings.

If you are planning to sell soon, or even if you are looking to make your home more comfortable, new flooring is one of the smartest upgrades you can make. Your floors make up nearly the entire surface of a house, which means they create a big effect on how buyers feel.

Can you still have hardwood? Absolutely, but be selective. Harder woods like hickory and white oak resist dents better, while low-sheen finishes or Khargharonline.com distressed or hand-scraped textures camouflage minor marks much better than high-gloss finishes.

Moisture protection is another key function, particularly over concrete. Concrete may release moisture vapour over time, so an underlay with a built-in vapour barrier protects the flooring from warping.

The result is a floor that looks just like solid hardwood but behaves better in Canadian conditions. Since it is more stable, engineered wood can often be installed in areas where solid hardwood would struggle, including below-grade rooms and on concrete.

Modern laminate has come a long way significantly. High-quality laminate products feature detailed photographic layers and textures that follow the grain that look very realistic. The tough top layer keeps it very resistant to daily wear, and it is priced less. Many newer products also offer improved water resistance.

The right underlay also hides small irregularities in the base while adds a little comfort and insulation. Note, though, that cannot replace levelling the subfloor: major unevenness should be levelled before installation.

Laminate makes a strong option. Its hard melamine surface stays very resistant to scratches, often even more than vinyl. Look for laminates with an AC4 or AC5 rating as well as good moisture protection for families with pets.

A mudroom needs something tough and easy to clean, while a master bedroom may prioritize comfort and warmth. Wet areas are best served by water-resistant products like LVP or tile.
