Tout le monde (grand public)

Is hardwood an option? Absolutely, but choose wisely. Harder species like oak, maple or hickory resist dents better, and low-sheen finishes or distressed or hand-scraped textures camouflage small scratches much better than a shiny finish.

Buyers notice floors right away. Old, stained carpet, scratched hardwood or mismatched flooring create a signal suggesting that the home needs work. On the other hand, fresh, modern flooring can make a house feel move-in ready, which often helps it sell faster.

If you plan to put your house on the market soon, or you simply want to refresh your living space, replacing old flooring is easily one of the smartest renovations available. The floor cover most of the visible space of your home, so they have a big effect on how buyers feel.

Turning a basement into living space is a great way to increase the usable space and value in your house. But lower levels present unique challenges: concrete slabs, humidity plus chilly surfaces. The wrong floor can lead to mold, warping and wasted money.

Porcelain tile are still a classic choice. Tiles are nearly impervious to water, long-lasting and comes in endless styles, from wood-effect tiles and marble and stone looks. Choose tiles with good slip resistance for safety, then consider heated floors to keep tile warm.

Continuity also counts. Too many materials from room to room often makes a space appear choppy. Installing one continuous floor through the main living areas gives a sense of flow that feels more modern.

When shopping, pay attention to the veneer thickness. A thicker top layer allows sanding and refinishing down the road, adding to the floor's lifespan. Don't forget to maintain humidity at a steady level all year long.

When planning a flooring project, they tend to focus on the colour, Filmyhd.net the style and the price per square foot. But what lies beneath your planks is just as important. The right underlayment can make a big difference in how the floor feels, sound and moisture protection, while it helps your flooring last longer.

Vinyl plank is usually the top option for lower levels. Most LVP collections are water-resistant, so they won't swell or rot if a small leak appears. SPC and WPC planks also bridge small irregularities in the subfloor.

That is where engineered hardwood stands out. Rather than using one solid board, an engineered plank is made of several layers: a top layer of real wood bonded to a stable core. This layered structure reduces seasonal movement.

A key function is sound reduction. Floating floors often sound noisy without proper underlayment. A quality underlayment absorbs impact sound, which is especially useful in multi-storey homes in which strata rules frequently require a minimum IIC or STC rating.

Houses across Canada go through dramatic humidity changes throughout the year. In the cold months, our heaters dehydrate the air; in the warm months, humidity climb quickly. For wood flooring, this cycle may cause gaps, crowning and movement.

Laminate makes a good contender. Its protective top layer is very resistant to claw marks, often even more than other floors. Select a laminate with a high AC rating and good moisture protection for families with pets.

What you get is flooring that looks exactly like traditional wood but behaves better in our climate. Since it moves less, engineered hardwood is often suitable in rooms in which solid wood would struggle, such as lower levels and on concrete.

Ceramic and porcelain tile stays extremely durable, though it can feel chilly unless you add in-floor heating. Carpet, on the other hand, feels warm but may hold moisture, which is why rugs over a hard floor are usually a better solution.

Hardwood remains a feature buyers love. Engineered hardwood offers that same premium look and greater stability in Canadian conditions. If your budget is tighter, LVP or laminate can deliver a comparable modern look for less.

The right underlay also hides slight unevenness in the base while adds a little comfort and insulation. Note, however, it does not replace proper subfloor preparation: big height differences need to be corrected before installation.

Kitchens and bathrooms count as the hardest-working rooms in the house. They get water, steam, heavy foot traffic and constant cleaning. The floor you install here has to stay moisture-resistant, tough and simple to maintain while still offering great design.

Installation tends to be more versatile. Depending on the product, engineered wood can be installed as a floating floor, glued and also stapled. That flexibility helps make it a favourite for contractors and homeowners alike.

Engineered hardwood is a possibility for those who want real wood. Due to its stable core, engineered wood resists moisture swings better than solid wood, which should generally be avoided on concrete. Use a proper vapour barrier for the best results.

Protection from moisture is another major benefit, particularly in basements. Concrete can release humidity over time, so an underlay with a built-in vapour barrier helps protect laminate and wood floors from swelling.
