The single largest cost driver is not the choice of swift web framework — it remains unclear scope. Every ambiguity in the specification becomes a contingency inside the number you receive. A supplier that cannot see what happens on the unhappy path will assume the worst. Putting two weeks into a proper discovery often reduces the overall figure far more than negotiating the rate.
Third-party integrations are another reliable source of cost. A feature that touches only your own data is predictable; the same functionality talking to a legacy ERP is another matter entirely. The unknown lives in the counterparty: poor documentation, long certification processes, enterprise php fields that mean something different on each side. Ask the estimator to price integrations separately, because this is where estimates break.
Quality attributes quietly rewrite the estimate. A tool used by twenty people is a very different build from the same feature set handling a hundred thousand users. Compliance work, high availability, performance under load, traceability and localisation all add real engineering time. Write them down at the start or you can expect them to arrive later as change requests.
The team you are quoted matters. A day rate says almost nothing on its own: an experienced engineer at a premium rate is often cheaper overall than two inexperienced developers who need supervision and rework. Check too which roles are billed: project management, QA, DevOps and analysis are legitimate costs, but these should be visible in the estimate.
The quoted figure is not what you will actually spend. Budget for hosting, subscriptions and licences, observability and a maintenance allowance each year. A reasonable rule of thumb says that any production system consumes a recurring percentage of the original budget per year in fixes, updates and small changes. Leaving it out of the budget remains the classic mistake.
