The right underlay can also compensates for small irregularities in the base while gives a little cushioning and warmth. Keep in mind, though, that cannot replace proper subfloor preparation: major unevenness must be levelled before installation.

Humidity is very important. During the heating season, the air in your home gets extremely dry, which causes natural wood to shrink and gaps to form. A humidifier that keeps humidity around 35 to 50 percent helps protect your floors and your furniture.

Turning a basement into living space is an excellent way to add living space and value in your house. Yet below-grade spaces present specific problems: cold concrete, moisture and lower temperatures. A poor flooring choice often causes mold, swelling and expensive replacements.

Road salt leaves a hazy residue that can damage the surface of hardwood, laminate and vinyl. Clean salty puddles as soon as possible with a damp microfibre mop together with a pH-neutral cleaner. Never use soaking the floor on wood and laminate.

One of its main jobs is sound reduction. Floating floors often sound noisy if installed directly on the subfloor. The right underlay dampens that hollow sound, which is especially important in condos where condo boards frequently require a minimum IIC or STC rating.

When your household includes dogs, cats or young children, you know that floors can get damaged. Claws, toys, accidents and muddy boots quickly wear down a delicate surface in no time. The good news: modern flooring products are made to survive real life.

A thick wear layer helps resist scratches, while its softer feel is less noisy for running feet and paws.

What about hardwood? It is possible, though choose wisely. Dense species like oak, maple or hickory resist dents better, while low-sheen finishes or textured surfaces hide everyday wear far better than a shiny finish.

Luxury vinyl plank and tile have become a favourite for kitchens and bathrooms. Waterproof cores guarantee that splashes cannot harm your investment when wiped up quickly. LVP stays softer under bare feet than tile, something much appreciated during winter.

Engineered wood is a possibility when you prefer a genuine wood surface. Thanks to its stable core, engineered wood handles moisture swings better than solid hardwood, and solid wood is not recommended in basements. Use a proper vapour barrier to protect it.

LVP is usually the best choice below grade. Most vinyl products are completely water-resistant, so they won't be damaged if humidity shows up. SPC and WPC vinyl also hide minor imperfections in the subfloor.

Quality laminate is also a great option. The protective top layer is tough against claw marks, sometimes better than other floors. Choose products with a high AC rating as well as good moisture protection for the best performance.

Before choosing a floor, check the humidity of the concrete. A quick test like taping a square of plastic onto the slab for 24 to 48 hours can show any moisture problem. Address any leaks before you install new flooring.

Laminate has evolved dramatically. Good laminate products uses realistic printed designs and textured surfaces that feel remarkably natural. The tough top layer makes it resistant to daily wear, and it is priced lower. Several laminates also offer better moisture protection.
