Vinyl plank is widely considered the go-to floor for basements. Many LVP collections are completely water-resistant, so they won't be damaged when moisture appears. Rigid core planks also hide small irregularities in the subfloor.

LVP is usually the first recommendation for pet owners. It's water-resistant, meaning pet accidents become easy to clean up. A thick wear layer helps prevent scuffs, and the softer surface is quieter for running feet and paws.

Luxury vinyl is softer and quieter underfoot compared to tile or stone, while several products offer an attached underlayment for better sound absorption.

Picking a new floor is among the most significant decisions you can make during a remodeling project. Across Canada, the selection is especially important because our interiors must survive cold, dry winters, humid summers, slush and salt carried in at the door.

Turning a basement into living space is an excellent way to gain extra square footage and comfort to your home. However below-grade spaces present unique challenges: cold concrete, humidity plus colder floors. A poor flooring choice often causes mold, buckling and expensive replacements.

Natural hardwood remains a timeless option. It offers warmth that many buyers love, and it is often sanded and refinished several times during its lifespan. That ability means a hardwood floor to last a very long time. Hardwood also boosts resale value in many markets.

If you share your home with little ones and four-legged friends, you know how quickly floors take a beating. Paws, toy cars and blocks, accidents and snow and slush will wear down a poorly chosen floor in a few months. The good news: today's floor options are designed to handle real life.

Before anything else, check for moisture in the slab. A quick test like taping a plastic sheet onto the slab for a day or two will indicate any moisture problem. Solve any leaks prior to installing any floor.

Durability is also a strong point. The best LVP products come with a tough top coating that protects against everyday wear, stains and fading. Busy households value the low maintenance: a quick sweep and occasional damp mopping are all it takes.

Quality laminate is also a good contender. Its hard melamine surface is highly resistant to scratches, sometimes better than vinyl. Select laminates with a high AC rating as well as water-resistant edges for the best performance.

Engineered wood can also work if you want natural wood. Thanks to its cross-ply structure, it handles moisture swings much better than solid wood, Filmyhd.Net which is a poor choice in basements. Install it with an appropriate underlay for long-term performance.

Modern laminate has improved a lot. High-quality laminate products feature detailed photographic layers and textures that follow the grain that look surprisingly realistic. Its tough top layer keeps it highly resistant to daily wear, and it comes in lower. Many collections even provide improved water resistance.

That is where engineered wood stands out. Rather than using a solid plank, engineered flooring is made of multiple layers: a top layer of real wood on top of a dimensionally stable base. That construction reduces the natural movement of wood.

In recent years, luxury vinyl plank has grown into one of the best-selling types of flooring across the country. It is easy to see why: it looks great, it stands up to spills, and it works with a wide range of budgets.

What about hardwood? Absolutely, but be selective. Harder species like oak, maple or hickory resist dents better, while low-sheen finishes and textured surfaces hide small scratches far better than high-gloss finishes.

Your budget is another deciding factor. Laminate delivers a realistic wood look at an affordable cost, while LVP blends affordability with excellent moisture protection. Keep in mind to include underlayment, trims and moldings, and installation when comparing prices.

Ultimately, which one makes sense? If the real thing and the ability to refinish are what you want, choose engineered or solid hardwood. If budget, durability and low upkeep are more important, quality laminate is a smart choice.

The Canadian climate has a major role. Solid hardwood expands and contracts with changes in humidity, which means it should be installed with proper acclimatization and a stable indoor environment. Engineered wood provides the same natural look but with greater resistance to movement, making it a favourite for Canadian homes.

The first thing to do is to think about the way you live in each space. A mudroom requires something tough and easy to clean, whereas a master bedroom can focus more on comfort and warmth. Kitchens and bathrooms benefit from water-resistant products such as luxury vinyl plank or tile.

The number one selling point of luxury vinyl is that many products are waterproof. Compared with solid hardwood, good vinyl flooring does not swell or cup when exposed to spills. This makes it an excellent choice for kitchens, bathrooms and basements.
