Tout le monde (grand public)

Kitchens and washrooms count as the hardest-working rooms in any home. They get splashes, steam, heavy foot traffic and daily cleaning. The floor you install here needs to stay water-resistant, durable and low maintenance and still deliver great design.

When your household includes pets and kids, you have probably learned that floors take a beating. Paws, toy cars and blocks, juice spills and snow and slush can scratch a poorly chosen floor faster than you think. Luckily: modern floor products are designed to stand up to real life.

The biggest advantage of luxury vinyl is its resistance to moisture. In contrast to natural wood, a well-made LVP does not swell or cup when exposed to spills. It is therefore a perfect fit for wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

Porcelain tile are still a proven solution. Tiles are virtually waterproof, scratch-resistant and available in a huge variety of designs, from wood-look planks and marble and stone looks. Look for tiles with good slip resistance for safety, then add radiant heating for extra comfort.

Laminate is also a good contender. Its protective top layer is very resistant to claw marks, sometimes better than vinyl. Choose a laminate with a high AC rating as well as good moisture protection for the best performance.

The first line of defence is the entrance. Place a heavy-duty mat outside plus a washable absorbent rug indoors the main entrances. This combination catches much of the dirt and salt before it can scratch your floors. Add a boot tray so dripping shoes don't sit directly on the floor.

Durability is another strong point. Most vinyl planks feature a tough top coating designed to resist scuffs and scratches, stains and UV fading. Homes with dogs and cats love how little care it needs: a quick sweep and a damp mop are usually enough.

When you are deciding on a wood-look floor, two options almost always come up first: laminate flooring and natural hardwood. Each of them can look stunning, but they have important differences in price, durability and maintenance.

Natural hardwood is the traditional favourite. It adds authentic grain that is hard to copy, and it is often sanded and refinished many times over its life. That ability means quality hardwood to last a very long time. It usually increases resale value across Canada.

Houses across Canada face big humidity changes every year. In the cold months, our heaters dehydrate the air; in summer, moisture levels rise again. For wood flooring, these changes may cause gapping, crowning and movement.

Comfort underfoot counts too, especially when temperatures drop. Vinyl feels warmer and softer under your feet compared to porcelain or stone, and many planks offer an attached underlayment that adds extra comfort.

Can you still have hardwood? Absolutely, but choose wisely. Harder woods such as hickory, maple and oak are more resistant, while low-sheen finishes and natural grain patterns disguise minor marks far better than a shiny finish.

Today's laminate flooring has come a long way a lot. High-quality laminate feature detailed photographic layers and textures that follow the grain that feel very realistic. The wear layer keeps it very resistant to scratches, and it costs less. A growing number of laminates now include better moisture protection.

So, which one is right for you? When the real thing plus the ability to refinish matter most, consider engineered or solid hardwood. If cost, scratch resistance and low upkeep top your list, laminate is hard to beat.

Luxury vinyl plank is usually the first recommendation for families. It's waterproof or highly water-resistant, so water bowls become easy to clean up. A strong wear layer will help resist scratches, while the softer surface feels more comfortable than tile.

Luxury vinyl are now the most popular choice in wet areas. Waterproof cores mean that splashes cannot harm the floor as long as you clean them up. LVP stays warmer underfoot than tile, which is a real plus during winter.

Can you use wood in these rooms? Water-resistant laminate are a valid option in kitchens, provided that spills are wiped up quickly. Wood may also work in a kitchen with caution, however in full bathrooms, tile and vinyl are the better options.

Canadian winters are picturesque, however they are tough on floors. Snow, calcium chloride, gravel and dry heated air will wear out your flooring over time. With the right routine, it is easy to keep your floors beautiful all season long.

Moisture levels is critical. During the heating season, indoor air can become very dry, leading to wood floors to contract and gaps to open. Using a humidifier to maintain indoor humidity in a moderate range helps protect your wood floors as well as your furniture.
